![]() Bennett was a career diplomat who served as United States Ambassador to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) at Brussels, Belgium (1977-1983) to the United Nations Security Council (1971-1977) to Portugal (1966-1969) and to the Dominican Republic (1964-1966).īennett was born in Griffin, Georgia on April 1, 1917. retired in 1985 with more than forty years of diplomatic experience under nine presidents. The longest serving officer in the American Foreign Service, William Tapley Bennett, Jr. Included are correspondence, speeches, clippings, printed material, photographs, and appointment books. The papers also document his military service, personal life, and involvement in international diplomatic organizations. Other assignments documented include Austria, Portugal, and Maxwell Air Force Base. Of particular note, are the materials from Bennett's assignment as Ambassador to the Dominican Republic during the 1965 Dominican Crisis. The papers mainly document Bennett's diplomatic and ambassadorial service with the United States Department of State, the United Nations Security Council (1971-1977), and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization's North Atlantic Council (1977-1983).
